Drip, Drip, Drip

Several weeks ago, I sat on the sofa, playing on my phone. I knew I needed to go to bed, but I procrastinated. Ugly weather stormed through, and I kept hearing a funny noise in the front yard. What was that? Was that water? I wondered if the gutters were blocked and rain was spilling over the edge. I finally peeled myself off the couch to peek through the front window blinds. A drop of water landed on my head! My roof was leaking! Above me, I could see the paint swollen with water, and more drops continued to fall – a less than ideal situation!

My husband and I worked to cover the floor with plastic and place towels and dishpans to catch the water. I didn’t want to sit up all night tending a leaky roof, but I also didn’t want to wake up to a soggy living room and wet hardwood floors. The next morning, we had collected about a gallon of water! Thank goodness I didn’t go to bed early – I would never have heard the dripping!

We replaced our roof last September (2024) for a very pretty penny!  You can imagine our frustration. We called the roofing company, and they responded really quickly. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to figure out the problem. They fixed one area, but then we had more leaking afterward. Hopefully they will find the answer. Every time it rains, I have to truck out the dishpans and towels, just in case!

So, even the realtor’s house has crises. If you’re going to own a home, you’ll need an emergency fund. Home maintenance is a big deal! And even when you do your best to manage things (like replacing an old roof), surprises still happen!
