Need A New Desk?
I saw this bad boy out on someone’s lawn. Kind of smacks of Covid-Work-From-Home days. It’s been five years. Are you still there - at home on a junky table top slapped over some cabinet drawers? Many offices required employees to return to the mother ship and leave their PJs behind. Other companies sold their brick-and-mortar, never to return. Maybe you have always worked from home. What is your status? How do you feel about it? Do you like your home office space?
We remember the photos of the computer on the ironing board, the little desk plunked in front of the bathroom vanity, the shower stall turned cubicle. Surely we’ve all upgraded since then!
Even if you returned to the office, we all need a space at home to process bills, place the online grocery order, and email Grandma, who isn’t text-savvy. And, scrolling through real estate photos on the big screen is far superior to squinting at them on your phone. Trust me on that one!
Five years is a long time. Are we ready to upgrade our home office, or redecorate, or reimagine? Technology evolves, shouldn’t our workspaces? While we cannot always control the amount of stress involved with our jobs, we can choose to make our workspace as pleasant and healthy as possible.
Do you need to clean? Paper debris, mail, scribbled notes, messy supplies – things pile up. File, shred, toss, and put away. And if there’s not a place to put things away, make a plan for more storage. Cleaning and streamlining your workspace to create visual peace is a huge deal. This will relieve stress and anxiety. Clutter dampens creativity, interrupts workflow, and negatively affects mental health.
We’re all aging, just at different rates. Is your chair still comfortable? Consider other physical upgrades: an ergonomic mouse, a foot stool, speaker upgrades, etc. If you haven’t figured out standing vs. sitting, it’s time. I hear mixed reviews on the desk treadmill. If you haven’t tried one, you might be able to borrow one from a friend who has already given that a whirl and abandoned the idea.
Your tech is aging, too. How old is your desktop? Your laptop? Back up files and free up some space. Watch for deals on new gadgetry – Amazon Prime Day in July will be here before you know it! Keep an eye on the tech market for new products that save time.
Aesthetics - my favorite! Who wants to work in the ugly zone? Find interesting storage solutions that double as decor. Refresh your artwork, add beautiful fabrics, try a new rug. Change your color scheme during the warmer months and tuck your wintery things away. You can enjoy the change of scenery again when you reverse the process in the fall. And stick a real live plant in your office. After all, everyone needs an office mate! Feeling fancy? Buy some fresh flowers for your desk.
And, if you just can’t make the home workspace work, call me. I’ll help you sell your house and buy a new one! (Or if you want a janky desk - I can tell you where to find this one for free!)
